Manual Therapy for Voice and Swallowing

Manual Therapy for Voice includes body work on the face, neck, jaw, tongue, laryngeal region, diaphragm region

Manual Therapy, similar to “Myofascial Release” emphasizes vocal function, swallowing, and breathing and is often utilized by Speech Therapists, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and other professionals.  As you may already know, our swallowing apparatus sits right next to our breathing mechanism, and the vocal folds are involved in both. I opted to train in this method because I have witnessed miraculous shifts in vocal quality when utilized.

This type of bodywork may involve vocalization and always involves collaboration between client and practitioner, which fits well with my belief that the voice seeks empowerment through active participation in the process, and this is key to releasing patterns of holding/restriction.

We don’t actually know the exact mechanism behind why various forms of bodywork are effective at releasing tension, improving mood, relieving pain, improving vocal and swallowing function, and countless other benefits. Is it due to changes in the fascia? The muscular system? The organs? The brain? However consistently the research tells us that it works, and when relevant change is occurring we feel it.

Our minds want to define, label, and understand, to quantify recovery in prescriptive guarantees. However, by “defining” something we close the case, and abandon our nuanced experience. What if the places we hold tension seek attunement, and a diagnosis is not as relevant as being with the mystery?

I have come to believe that revealing a free voice involves unwinding our unique story through expressions that are, seen, felt, and heard. Similarly, pain and restriction held in the body may be released when their underlying messages are honored and integrated.
